The Plant
Sage (Salvia officinalis) is a hardy Mediterranean shrub with soft, grey-green leaves, cultivated across southern Europe for millennia and long valued in traditional European cooking, particularly in Italian and French kitchens where it flavors rich, fatty dishes like sausages, stuffing, and roasted poultry.
Sage Vitality vs. the Standard Bottle
Sage Vitality is the dietary-labeled version of Young Living’s Sage oil, distilled from the same plant as the standard bottle — the difference is in labeling and intended use rather than in the oil itself. The standard (non-Vitality) Sage bottle is intended for aromatic and topical use, where it should be diluted well before applying to skin, while Vitality is meant for adding to food in small amounts.
In the Kitchen
A single drop replaces a generous pinch of dried sage in savory dishes like stuffing, brown-butter pasta sauces, or roasted squash — it’s strong, so add gradually and taste as you go rather than following a fresh-herb recipe’s quantities directly.
Internal Use
Sage contains thujone, a constituent best used in small amounts and not continuously over long stretches. Follow label directions closely, use it short-term rather than as a daily addition, and avoid it if pregnant, nursing, or on medication without checking with a healthcare provider first, since thujone can interact with certain conditions and medications.
A Note on Concentration
Because dried sage itself is already a fairly potent culinary herb, sage essential oil is one of the more concentrated dietary oils in the lineup — a little truly goes a long way, and there’s rarely a reason to use more than a drop per dish.
