Australian Blue

What It’s Built From

Australian Blue takes its name and much of its character from Blue Cypress, a distinctive oil steam-distilled from the wood of Callitris intratropica, a tree native to Australia’s Northern Territory. The wood’s naturally occurring guaiazulene gives both the raw oil and this blend their striking deep-blue tint, a visual signature that’s rare among essential oils and part of why the blend carries the name.

The Aroma

The overall profile is smooth, woodsy, and slightly sweet rather than sharp or resinous — closer to sandalwood or cedarwood in feel than to the greener, sharper cypress oils distilled from Mediterranean varieties. It leans grounding and calming rather than bright or energizing, which is the intended effect behind pairing it with citrus or floral notes in a diffuser blend.

In the Diffuser

3–5 drops works well during tense or overwhelming moments, or simply as a woodsy base note for an evening blend. Layering in a citrus oil like orange or bergamot balances the woodsy depth and keeps the overall aroma from feeling too heavy in a small room.

On Skin

Dilute to 2–3% in a carrier oil for pulse-point or wrist application. Patch-test first, as with any new blend, particularly if your skin tends to react to woodsy or resinous oils.

Regional Sourcing

Blue Cypress is a comparatively niche oil outside Australia, harvested from a specific regional wood supply rather than grown as a widespread agricultural crop. That regional sourcing is part of what gives Australian Blue its distinct character compared to the more common cedarwood- or pine-based woodsy blends found in most collections.
