## Key constituents

- **Limonene** (90-95%) — The overwhelmingly dominant compound in cold-pressed orange oil, giving its sweet citrus character
- **Myrcene** (1-3%) — A minor terpene adding a subtle green, herbaceous facet

## How to use it

- **In the diffuser:** 3–5 drops brightens almost any room; pairs naturally with cedarwood, clove, or ylang ylang.
- **On skin:** Dilute 1–3% in a carrier oil.
- **Around the house:** A common note in DIY cleaning sprays and air fresheners.

## Safety

- Cold-pressed sweet orange is generally considered non-phototoxic, but oxidized (old) oil is more likely to irritate skin — dilute for topical use.
- Maximum dermal use: Dilute in a carrier oil for skin.
- Unlike bergamot, lemon, and lime, cold-pressed sweet orange oil is generally considered non-phototoxic — but dilute it for skin use anyway.
- Citrus oils oxidise quickly; store cool and sealed to avoid skin-sensitising breakdown products.
- Keep out of reach of children.

## What the research says

- Sweet orange oil is dominated by limonene, a terpene that shows antioxidant activity in laboratory studies. That's a lab finding about a compound, not a proven health benefit of the oil. — Shah et al. (2018), Asian J. of Pharmacy and Pharmacology (https://doi.org/10.31024/ajpp.2018.4.6.25)

## Evidence

- Cold-pressed sweet orange peel oil is ~90%+ limonene, which defines its bright, sweet-citrus aroma. — Sharma & Tripathi (2003), Journal of Essential Oil Research (https://doi.org/10.1080/10412905.2003.9698624)

## Frequently asked questions

### Is sweet orange oil phototoxic like other citrus oils?

Generally no. Cold-pressed sweet orange is one of the few citrus oils considered non-phototoxic, unlike bergamot, lemon, and lime. It's still wise to dilute it for skin use.

### Why does orange oil lose its scent over time?

Cold-pressed citrus oils are limonene-rich and oxidise faster than steam-distilled oils. Keep the bottle cool, sealed, and out of light, and use it within a year or so.

### Can I diffuse orange oil around kids?

Diffused in the air it's a gentle, uplifting choice. As with any essential oil, diffuse in a ventilated room, keep the bottle out of reach, and never let a child ingest it.
