Chemotypes seen in the samples: terpinen-4-ol (35% of samples), trans-methyl cinnamate (17% of samples), linalool (13% of samples), sabinene hydrate (9% of samples), carvacrol (7% of samples).

## Key constituents

- **Terpinen-4-ol** (20-30%) — The dominant compound, giving marjoram its gentle, slightly peppery herbal character
- **Cis-sabinene hydrate** (5-15%) — Contributes to the soft, sweet-herbaceous background note
- **Gamma-terpinene** (5-10%) — A common herbal monoterpene rounding out the aroma

## How to use it

- **In the diffuser:** 3–5 drops for a warm, comforting note, often paired with lavender or cedarwood.
- **In massage:** Dilute to 3–5% in a carrier oil for a warming rub after activity.

## Safety

- For topical use, dilute in a carrier oil (around 3–5% for massage) and patch-test first.
- Maximum dermal use: Dilute in a carrier oil for skin.
- Sweet marjoram is a gentle oil — but make sure you have true Origanum majorana, not carvacrol-rich 'Spanish marjoram', which is far harsher.
- Not phototoxic. Dilute for skin use.
- Keep out of reach of children.

## What the research says

- Sweet marjoram oil has been characterised chemically and studied for antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in vitro. Its calming, warming reputation is traditional rather than clinically proven. — Vera & Chane-Ming (1999), Food Chemistry (https://doi.org/10.1016/s0308-8146(98)00018-1)

## Evidence

- Sweet marjoram is led by terpinen-4-ol with a group of monoterpenes — a gentle profile unlike the carvacrol-dominant oregano oils. — Vera & Chane-Ming (1999), Food Chemistry (https://doi.org/10.1016/s0308-8146(98)00018-1)

## Frequently asked questions

### Is marjoram the same as oregano?

They're close botanical relatives but different oils. Sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana) is gentle and terpinen-4-ol-rich; oregano (Origanum vulgare) is harsh and carvacrol-rich. Don't substitute one for the other in safety terms.

### Is marjoram oil safe for skin?

Sweet marjoram is one of the gentler herb oils and is well tolerated when diluted. Just confirm your bottle is true Origanum majorana rather than a carvacrol-rich 'Spanish marjoram'.

### Is marjoram phototoxic?

No — marjoram isn't phototoxic, so there's no sun-exposure restriction. Dilute it for topical use as usual.
