## Key constituents

- **Limonene** (55-75%) — The dominant compound; gives lemon its bright, characteristic citrus scent and flavor

## How to use it

- **In the diffuser:** 3–5 drops alone, or with peppermint, for a fresh, energizing daytime atmosphere.
- **On skin:** Phototoxic — if used topically, dilute well and avoid sun exposure for at least 12 hours.
- **Around the house:** A favorite in DIY surface sprays for its scent and grease-cutting power.

## Safety

- Lemon is phototoxic — if used topically, dilute well and avoid sun or UV exposure for at least 12 hours afterward.
- Maximum dermal use: 2% on skin (expressed lemon — phototoxicity).
- Phototoxic — avoid UV exposure after topical use.
- Cold-pressed lemon is phototoxic (contains coumarins): avoid UV / direct sun for 12–18 hours after topical use.
- Dilute in a carrier oil; steam-distilled lemon is not phototoxic if you need a sun-safe option.
- Keep out of reach of children.

## What the research says

- Lemon inhalation has been tested for nausea — for example a randomized trial in pregnancy — with some benefit reported. Findings are small-scale and preliminary, not a treatment. — Yavari Kia et al. (2014), Iranian Red Crescent Medical Journal (https://doi.org/10.5812/ircmj.14360)

## Evidence

- Cold-pressed lemon peel oil is dominated by limonene, with β-pinene and γ-terpinene as the next largest fractions. — Ahmed et al. (2001), Journal of Essential Oil Research (https://doi.org/10.1080/10412905.2001.9699646)
- Controlled testing confirms expressed lemon oil is phototoxic on skin later exposed to UV — the basis for diluting it and avoiding sun after topical use. — Naganuma et al. (1985), Archives of Dermatological Research (https://doi.org/10.1007/bf00412492)

## Frequently asked questions

### Is lemon essential oil phototoxic?

Cold-pressed (expressed) lemon oil is mildly phototoxic because of natural coumarins. Diluted on skin, avoid UV and direct sun for 12–18 hours — or use a steam-distilled lemon oil, which isn't phototoxic.

### Can I diffuse lemon oil any time?

Yes — phototoxicity is only a skin-plus-sunlight concern. Diffusing lemon into the air carries no phototoxic risk.

### Does lemon oil help with nausea?

A few small randomized studies (including one in pregnancy) suggest inhaling lemon may ease nausea. It's a low-risk thing to try, not a substitute for medical advice.
