## Key constituents

- **Alpha-Pinene** (40-50%) — The dominant terpene, giving juniper berry oil its crisp, woodsy-pine character
- **Myrcene** — Contributes an herbaceous, slightly peppery note
- **Sabinene**

## How to use it

- **In the diffuser:** 3–5 drops for a fresh, woodsy scent that pairs well with citrus oils.
- **On skin:** Dilute 2–4% in a carrier oil for massage blends; patch-test first.

## Safety

- Juniperus species vary in chemistry; dilute for topical use and avoid internal use except under qualified guidance.
- Maximum dermal use: Dilute in a carrier oil for skin.
- Traditionally avoided during pregnancy — check with a professional if pregnant.
- Store cool and sealed; oxidised pinene-rich oils are more likely to irritate skin.
- Not phototoxic. Keep out of reach of children.

## What the research says

- Juniper oil has been examined for antioxidant activity, and juniper preparations for anti-inflammatory activity, in laboratory and preclinical studies. These are early findings, not clinical proof of benefit. — Han & Parker (2017), Cogent Medicine (https://doi.org/10.1080/2331205x.2017.1306200)

## Evidence

- Juniper berry oil is a fresh, coniferous monoterpene oil dominated by α-pinene, with myrcene and sabinene as notable secondary constituents. — Höferl et al. (2014), Antioxidants (https://doi.org/10.3390/antiox3010081)

## Frequently asked questions

### Is juniper berry oil the same as the juniper in gin?

It comes from the same berries (Juniperus communis) that flavour gin, so the aroma is familiar — fresh, resinous, and evergreen. The essential oil is a concentrated steam distillate, not for drinking.

### Can I use juniper oil during pregnancy?

It's traditionally avoided during pregnancy. If you're pregnant, check with a qualified professional before using it.

### Is juniper phototoxic?

No — juniper isn't phototoxic. Just dilute it for skin and store it well-sealed to prevent oxidation.
