## Key constituents

- **Linalool** (40-55%) — Dominant compound giving basil its soft, slightly sweet herbaceous character
- **Methyl chavicol (estragole)** — Contributes basil's characteristic anise-like edge; proportion varies by chemotype

## Chemotypes

- **ct. linalool (sweet/European basil)** — The preferred, gentler type for aromatic use — linalool-dominant with lower estragole.
- **ct. estragole / methyl chavicol (exotic basil)** — High in estragole, a constituent flagged for caution; less suited to leave-on skin use.
- **ct. eugenol** — A spicier, clove-tinged type.

## How to use it

- **In the diffuser:** 3–5 drops alone, or with lemon or bergamot for a bright, focus-friendly blend.
- **On skin:** Dilute in a carrier oil — a traditional massage oil for tired muscles after activity.
- **Cooking? Use Vitality:** This aromatic oil isn't for eating — the Vitality version is the food-grade one, per label directions.

## Safety

- For topical use, dilute in a carrier oil and keep out of reach of children.
- Maximum dermal use: Dilute in a carrier oil for skin; prefer the linalool chemotype.
- Estragole (methyl chavicol) is flagged for caution — choose the linalool chemotype and keep dilution low, especially avoiding high-estragole 'exotic' basil for leave-on use.
- Traditionally avoided during pregnancy.
- Not phototoxic. Keep out of reach of children.

## What the research says

- Basil oil has been characterised chemically and studied for antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in the laboratory. These are in-vitro findings, not evidence it treats illness. — Béné et al. (2023), International Journal of Secondary Metabolite (https://doi.org/10.21448/ijsm.1230316)

## Evidence

- The favoured linalool chemotype of basil is linalool-dominant, with estragole a secondary constituent that varies sharply between chemotypes. — Béné et al. (2023), International Journal of Secondary Metabolite (https://doi.org/10.21448/ijsm.1230316)

## Frequently asked questions

### Are all basil essential oils the same?

No — basil has chemotypes. The linalool ('sweet') type is gentler and preferred for aromatic use; the estragole (methyl-chavicol) 'exotic' type is higher in a constituent flagged for caution. Check which one your bottle is.

### What is estragole and why does it matter?

Estragole (methyl chavicol) is a constituent found in higher amounts in 'exotic' basil that safety bodies flag for caution. Choosing the linalool chemotype and keeping dilution low sidesteps most of the concern.

### Is basil oil phototoxic?

No — basil isn't phototoxic. The main consideration is choosing the gentler linalool chemotype and diluting it for skin.
